Ready for lunch!

So apparently the slack workday I had yesterday will be every day. I got here at 8:30 this morning, and when I asked if there was something I could work on, my boss told me there were no articles.

Finally, around 10:30 she brough me some work: "Please edit these two photo captions." That was it. Now I'm back to doing nothing, so I thought I'd share the nothing with everyone else.

I'm getting pretty hungry. I had a croissant from the cafe downstairs for breakfast. Of course, when I told Steven that, his reaction was, "Eat Chinese food!" But Annie and PA said that Chinese breakfast is gross; apparently they eat things like like cabbage and porridge first thing in the morning.

Today for lunch we get to eat in the cafeteria, which is free and therefore awesome. I'm not sure if this is the case or not because I haven't finished reading, but in Wild Swans--the biography of 3 Chinese women I've been reading--the government pays for everyone to eat and sleep. The "work unit" cares for the employees. Good ol' socialism.

Of course, again... If they're feeding me but I'm not really doing much work. That's making me feel really guilty.

I just talked to my deskmate, Fan, about breakfast. I've seen a stand on the road near the office where they appear to drop dough into a vat of grease and serve it like a pastry for breakfast. Fan (or Fiona, which is her chosen English name) said that some of the people that work here stop and get it, but that she doesn't like fried foods very much. I think I'll try it tomorrow. She said they are probably less than 2 yuan, or 30 cents. Sounds like a good deal to me.

I told Steven earlier that I'm worried about my eating. The Japanese meal we got Sunday fed me for 3 meals. Maybe I'll be better about eating since we have access to the cafeteria. It's only day three, and I'm still getting adjusted, so I'm sure it will get better.
